Name: Demelza Daniella Robins
Gender: Female
Date of birth: 4th July, 1981
House/Year: Gryffindor (1992-1999)
Blood status: Half-blood
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Suggested livejournal username:
heytheredemelza
PB/Avatar: Isabel Lucas
Physical characteristics:
Slight in build and clocking up at a height of 5’7”, Demelza fears neither being too short nor too tall. She is endowed with long, blonde hair and a pair of green eyes. She has a few freckles smattered here and there across her nose – but these are very light.
She seemingly pays little attention to the world of fashion, but more or less follows whatever trends suit her best, which is generally that of a casual street look. Not prone to dying her hair wild colours (not opposed to it – she would if the mood struck her, but it hasn’t), or doing anything terribly fancy with it, it is generally left out. Unless she has to tie it up for work.
Notably a pretty girl, Demelza wears little make-up on a daily basis and is happy enough to step out the door without anything on at all. At home, she dresses comfortably and dons Muggle attire. Strange looks have never stopped her from wearing it outside in the Wizarding world, and she finds them so much more preferable to robes that she’s contemplating giving up on buying new robes altogether.
Distant History:
The youngest child and only daughter of Carey and Nina Robins (a Muggle and a Half-Blood witch respectively) Demelza Daniella wailed her way into the world on the 4th of July, 1981. Her older brother, Brae, who was 7 when she arrived – was much kinder than some little boys his age who’d been used to being spoiled their first few years of life, and took to his sister almost instantly. There is much photographic evidence of him sweetly doting upon her. Howell Robins, however, was the cheekier of the lads. Three years older than the baby of the family, he saw her entrance into the world as a wonderful gain of yet another sibling to tease and exasperate for his own amusement. Although the boy was never malicious, his parents did despair from time to time. Especially when his needling caused Demelza to perform her first dramatic act of underage magic by turning him green at the age of two.
The Robins’ resided in a quaint house in St. Ives, Cornwall, furnished with a mix of Carey’s taste of seaside décor and Nina’s French Country. Sometimes it worked, but generally it was the basis for a few of their ‘discussions’. It was these occasions that first prompted the children to haunt the nearby Porthmeor Beach. Here they mingled with their Muggle townsfolk, Howell managing it via picking up surfing and Demelza picking up friends by merely being the sort of child one would like to befriend. However, when they started studying at the local primary school, some of their peers developed a wary suspicion of the family thanks to a mild display of underage magic here or there. Brae, who had already been attending a Muggle primary school before his siblings, held his peers at more of a distance. Not out of any misguided pride, but merely that he didn’t seem to know how to fit in.
As Brae began at Hogwarts, the tensions between Carey and Nina deepened. It became more and more evident to Nina that her husband was having great difficulty in dealing with his children and wife belonging to a world that he could not be a part of. She was not sure how to fix this problem, because she never could see herself able to give up in magic altogether for him – and there was no way she would ask her children to make that sacrifice. Demelza lived only semi-aware of all that was going around her, and was, for the most part, quite blissful.
Demelza boarded the Hogwarts Express for the first time in 1992 with eager anticipation, and was sorted into Gryffindor (which she sometimes wonders at, for she cannot see much bravery in herself – though she admires it greatly in other people) after a momentary consideration.
It was in her second year that Demelza really began to strike up a close friendship with Ginny Weasley, who was in her dormitory. They bonded over being the youngest and a shared appreciation of Quidditch and chocolate cake. In her fourth year, Demelza was asked to come along to the first gathering of what would be Dumbledore’s Army at Hog’s Head, but she decided against – choosing her brother Howell’s advice to have as little to do with Umbridge, for or against her, as possible.
That Easter, Demelza returned home to Cornwall only to witness her parents separating, Nina moving to London and setting up home there – making it quite clear that Howell and Demelza were expected to come with her. Both refused, but as soon as their father swayed to Nina’s request, disgustedly gave up and reluctantly agreed. Carey and Nina officially divorced a year later. It was a messy and drawn-out affair that caused Demelza to be extremely cautious of the word ‘love’, deeming it a big and scary thing that people did not always mean when they said it in any other form than platonic.
As a child, Demelza had been exposed to Quidditch through Nina’s best friend, Rhys Wynne, who played for the Caerphilly Catapults in his time. He had much healthy antagonism for the Falmouth Falcons, and would make much of it whenever he had to visit Cornwall. But he did teach Demelza to fly, and to fly well. Her natural aptitude meant that he was willing to give her pointers here and there on her technique and quickly caved in to her requests to teach her Quidditch. It was he who helped her develop the talent of dodging bludgers that earned her a spot on the Gryffindor team in her fifth year.
What Wynne had not taught her, however, was how to deal with unwarranted abuse from cranky, teenaged boys who couldn’t keep their emotions or maturity in check. Ron Weasley was one of those people who made her cry, and she’s always been wary of any of his caustic ranting since, although her relationship with him did improve from that point on. What transpired with Cormac McLaggen, however, merely pissed her off – and while she may be more humane in her anger than others, she’s still quite sick of him and sees his admittance on the team for even that one game he played as Harry’s worst decision as Captain. Otherwise, she respects the Boy Who Lived and is happy so long as her best friend is happy with him.
Her sixth year at school, however, was a complete and utter nightmare. The Carrows had a particular hatred of her, seeing as she was begotten of a Muggle of all things, and yet she could prove a magical lineage through her mother. That aside, having to sit through Muggle Studies taught the way it was infuriated her to the point of tears and she could not always resign herself to the good sense of being silent. She therefore suffered detentions at the hands of those Professors, but she doesn’t speak very much about it at all, if she can help it. She’d prefer to leave it in the past where it belongs and move forward with her life.
The Battle at Hogwarts was, as one might suppose, the closing paragraph of a very dangerous year in the life of Demelza Robins. She remained at the school and assisted in the Battle where she could. Though, truth be told, her defensive magic was weak or shabby because only three years out of her six was she taught by competent people. The most scarring part of that evening still haunts her from time-to-time was the shocking discovery of her mother fighting for the other side. When the Battle was done with, Nina was revealed to be under an Imperious curse – and having been inflicted with yet another nasty, now suffers from a lacunar amnesia where she cannot recall having divorced her ex-husband.
Along with this was the horrible blow that came of losing Colin Creevey, who – despite his queer ways – had always been a good friend to Demelza. She misses him still, even all these years on, and doesn’t anticipate seeing days when she’ll stop missing him, even if she doesn’t actively think of it every hour.
Recent History:
With the Dark Lord gone, Demelza picked up the pieces as best she could. She suffered nightmares about the things she underwent with the Carrows, and they impacted her so much that boggarts stopped turning into gigantic flesh-eating slugs into manically laughing depictions of her former Death Eater Professors.
She returned to Hogwarts to finish her final year, which she did well enough, earning an O in Astronomy, Muggle Studies and Charms, and an E in Herbology, and History of Magic. She managed an Acceptable for DADA, which she believes a truly miraculous outcome. Moreso than the E in HoM.
Upon graduation, however, she had no idea what she’d like to do with her life. The idea to try-out for the Catapults weighed in her mind for a while and it still does, but she cannot bring herself to, for in August, 1999, Rhys Wynne killed himself. His suicide note brought to attention that he was incapable of dealing with having lost his wife in the war. It devastated Demelza, not to mention her mother. Following this, Nina (who could not remember the irrevocable mess her family had endured when she and Carey divorced) tried to reach out to her ex-husband in vain, and Demelza found herself having to support her mother through that emotional disappointment.
A brighter chapter of her life ignited when her brother Brae proposed to his girlfriend the following year. Clary, being the daughter of upper-class Muggles, had her fair share of trauma after being imprisoned in Azkaban because of her so-called crime of stealing her wand. She’d also lost a friend or several of her own over the course of the war and could relate to Demelza well. She was a great assistance in helping the younger sister-in-law-to-be to walk through her pain.
In 2001, three more important things happened in Demelza’s life: Her father remarried, which threw Nina into a depression, Brae and Clary had their big wedding in which Demelza was a bridesmaid, and she also met Merton Graves. Or rather, she happened to come across Merton when returning home after a night shift at the Daily Grind in time to witness him receiving a hard blow to the head by a falling object. Fearing a concussion, she rushed to his side and attended to him, chatting the night out to keep him awake. In an attempt to say thank you in his own quirky way, Merton wrote her song entitled ‘Demelza’, which was more of an acoustic slow-rock with witty lyrics. A slight deviation from the usual stuff that the Weird Sisters produced, but it was an instant hit with the fans and still receives radio-play across stations on the WWN. After hearing it first, she wrote him a long and squeeful letter and dragged him out for a drink. They’ve kept in touch ever since, and like they’ve consistently informed the press, neither have been romantically inclined towards the other. Although, the tabloids still disagree.
When not working, Demelza can be found hanging out with Ginny, any of her friends – new or old, or Llewylln Wynne, the 22-year-old Seeker for the Catapults and son of Demelza’s late mentor – named after the most famous historical member of that team.
Current employment status:
A waitress at the Daily Grind, Demelza has held this job for the last two years, along with a succession of short-lived and temporary secondary jobs. As the café is a twenty-four hour one, she works on a rotation of both day and night shifts – and being the sort of girl she is, will swap a shift with a friend to spend a good night out, only to have to work double from evening all the way through the next day. Having little idea with what she really wants to do with her life, she’s been spending these last two years insisting that this is only a temporary arrangement, and she will work out what her real job is soon.
Personality:
Demelza’s generally thought of as a kind soul, innately, in spite of her predilection for blonde moments and her almost uncontrollable tendency to rant. She’s an engaging and sociable creating who is inquisitive about people and their affairs – but never so much as to deliberately want to hurt them via malicious means, and would be disgusted at herself should this ever occur, even accidentally.
Quirky and quixotic are two of her particular traits. She retains, however, an acerbic side that has attached itself to her as a result of having lived through a war, and most significantly – under the reign of the Carrows. She would like to shed this if she can.
On the other hand, Demelza is never one to manipulate or use people. She loathes the thought of hurting anyone, but to her misfortune – this fear and her readily trusting nature, she is liable to be led into relationships that may not exactly be healthy or right for her.
She speaks candidly about matters that she feels strongly about – although she possesses tact enough to hold back if she can see it will hurt someone unnecessarily. However, should anyone prove to be especially caustic to her, she is prone to react emotionally – either with shouting or tears, or both. It depends on the person, really.
She’s a resilient creature, whose trusting nature and warmth gravitates people to her. She’s also a very loyal friend and places the value of her friendships above most other things in life, however, her ideals and her loyalty to that may outweigh – again, depending upon the person.
